Your nightstand or medicine cabinet may have the key to youthful-looking skin. This is because utilizing the correct skin-care products can improve your complexion and help you avoid indications of aging, such as wrinkles.
“Your skin is a living organ that evolves over time,” explains Jessica Wu, MD, a dermatologist in Los Angeles and the author of Feed Your Face. “Adjusting your skin care regimen to account for these changes will help your skin stay healthy and look its best.”
Here are some techniques and items to help you age gracefully:
- Use a Gentler Facial Cleanser
Use a delicate touch and formula when cleansing your skin. “The skin becomes less greasy and more sensitive,” Dr. Wu says. “So, even if you still suffer adult acne outbreaks, you should use a gentler face wash rather than a drying acne wash.”

Use a soft hand to cleanse in gentle, circular strokes. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, aggressive scrubbing can damage already delicate skin and hasten aging (AAD).
- Begin Using Retinoids
Collagen, the protein essential for maintaining skin smooth and raised, can be lost over time. This loss can cause a wrinkled appearance. The best line of defense, according to experts, is to take a retinoid, which is a prescription-strength version of vitamin A.
“I start recommending retinoids for anti-aging to my patients when they are in their thirties,” Wu says. She recommends starting with two to three applications per week and gradually increasing to nightly as your skin adjusts.
Gentler retinoid skin creams, such as RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream, are available online and in stores. However, Wu warns against using retinoids alongside benzoyl peroxide, a medication used to treat acne. This is due to the fact that benzoyl peroxide can oxidize some retinoids, making them less effective.
- Enhance Your SPF Routine
Regularly applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is an excellent approach to keep your skin healthy and avoid age spots and discolouration. When it comes to keeping skin soft, however, not all sunscreens are created equal.
“Use a more moisturizing sunscreen cream and avoid alcohol-containing sprays and gels, which can dry up your skin,” Wu advises. “Also, search for sunscreens that contain antioxidants to protect your skin’s collagen.”

- Apply a Richer Facial Cream
The AAD suggests moisturizing correctly to reduce fine lines and wrinkles because oil glands can become less active as you age.
Simply changing your regular face cream for a richer one will help retain water against the skin, filling in those deep cracks. Smooth the formula down to your neck and upper torso as an added benefit to treat those regions as well.
- Pay Attention to What You Eat
Much of what happens on the outside of your body is caused by what you put inside of it. It is critical to eat meals that nourish the skin over time. Avoid dehydrating substances such as alcohol. Furthermore, diets heavy in sugar and white carbs can accelerate aging by breaking down glucose. Instead, include extra protein in your diet, such as fish, lean meats, beans, and lentils, to help produce strong collagen. Wu also suggests eating meals strong in vitamin C to keep skin looking young.
“Cooked tomatoes are abundant in lycopene, an antioxidant that has been demonstrated to protect against sunburn and UV damage,” Wu explains. “If you’ve had a lot of sunburns in your younger years and are starting to develop spots and sun damage, eat more tomatoes.” Lycopene will not remove existing spots, but it will help prevent additional harm.
- Think about Supplements
Can a tablet make your skin look younger? Maybe. Omega-3 fatty acids contained in some seafood, such as salmon, can help keep skin moist and may even postpone skin maturation by avoiding wrinkles.
Wu recommends taking fish oil or flaxseed oil supplements if you don’t eat fish or fish items. “It’ll maintain your skin supple by replacing your skin’s natural lipids [or oils], which deplete with time.” If you have adult acne, it is also anti-inflammatory.”

- Exfoliate once a week
Our skin sheds dead cells on a daily basis, forming a new layer every 28 days. However, this process might slow down over time, resulting in a dull complexion and rough spots. Exfoliate monthly for brighter skin to help remove the buildup.
“Use a scrub with spherical granules to make it less unpleasant,” Wu suggests. However, avoid products containing plastic microbeads, which harm the environment and, when discharged into rivers, can be consumed by marine species.
